Hello Gentle Readers,
It's always fun to know really cool people. And it's really great to be able to make your 23rd post in March be a spotlight on a very awesome artist. Without further ado, here's Jen Gia!
She rules the Twitter!
A VERY MIMSEY INTERVIEW WITH JEN GIA!
Can you tell the audience at home a bit more about
you?
My name is Jen Giangregorio, but I go by Jen Gia
when performing since it’s so much easier to explain. I’m from Boston and I love that city – so
full of history and fun. I’m an
introvert but enjoy spending time with friends.
I’ve recently re-discovered reading for fun, and my favorite show
currently on the air is Parks and Recreation.
You’re a writer and stand-up comic. What got you
into writing?
I’ve been writing since I
was in 2nd grade – I’ve always had a vivid imagination and enjoyed
putting stories together. I decided to
focus on television sitcoms because you’re free to grow and shape characters
over seasons, and develop relationships and journeys.
And you can tell them to all dress fancily and it won't be weird.
When did you decide to get into stand-up?
I got into stand-up about four years
ago. I’m generally a funny person and
the first time I got on a stage, it was a challenge I wanted to meet, just to
see how it went. Then I said, “I can do
better than THAT.” Performing is still
a surprise for me since I consider myself to be shy.
When I imagine Jen Gia as shy,
I immediately think Shy Guy wearing a hat.
I'm a weird friend.
What’s been the hardest part of writing? What’s the
easiest?
The hardest part is finishing a
project. There’s a wall that happens
with most projects and until you find your way past it, it’s rough going. The second part is a trick question; there’s
no easy side to writing.
What’s keeps you going?
Knowing that each script makes me a better
writer and that each day I get closer to my goal. And I do love it.
What’s the best place for you to write?
I prefer Starbucks. You can’t marathon Netflix at Starbucks.
Challenge accepted!
What would you say to those who might be struggling
right now, who might have issues of confidence or faith in their abilities?
Do
the hard work – study, read, write.
What’s been
your favorite moment so far in comedy?
The times people pre-laugh at my jokes – it’s like I wrote a hit song.
Santa Sloth approves!
Where can our Gentle Readers find you?
Follow me on Twitter.com/JenGia for updates
about where I’ll be performing. Also, I'll be performing in the California's Funniest Female Competition.
Any tips for aspiring writers?
Your first draft is not your last draft. Revise and edit.
LIGHTNING ROUND:
Coffee or Tea – Coffee. For
caffeine and taste.
Cat or Dog - Dog
Cloche or Wide Brim – I had to look that up but cloche.
This is a cloche hat. Hat's are cool.
Football or Baseball - I enjoy watching football more.
Red Sox or Celtics – Either. Any
Boston team.
Krispy Kreme or Dunkin Donuts – Dunkin Donuts.
It feels like home.
Bubble Bath or Chocolate
- Chocolate.
Bathman is disappointed.
New Girl or The Mindy Project – Right
now, New Girl. But I admire Mindy Kaling
as well.
And finally, what would be the theme song for Jen
G?
I suppose I adopted “Build Me Up Buttercup” in high
school, so I’ll stick with that.
Play me out The Foundations!
Jay Mims writes books, blogs, and thinks Jen Gia needs to go on tour. Jay and The Mimsus live with a
passive-aggressive Dalek named Steve, and have semi-adopted their neighbor's
cat named Eartha Kitty. There's another cat named Meowthazar,
but he's not as interesting. Also a Lizard that Jay calls Bob. Jay
is far funnier on Facebook then in real life. He is terrible at Twitter. If you're an artist, writer, editor or publisher who would be interested in a Mimsey interview, review or spotlight then send me a note via Facebook or Twitter!
