The Mimsus and I: A Very SPECIAL Mimsey Interview

Hello Gentle Readers,

It's always fun talking with someone you love. It was while brainstorming material for posting every single day in March, I asked The Mimsus if she wanted to do an interview.

ME: Hey honey, remember how I'm posting every single day in March?
The Mimsus: Is that what you've been doing? I just thought you were hiding in your office watching Muppets.
ME: Uh...

We watched this together.
It was wonderful.

So, it's with great joy that I present a VERY SPECIAL interview with The Mimsus.

Keeping the mystery alive...

Hello Gentle Reader,

Do you like mysteries? Do you like Christmas? Do you like Christmas mysteries?

BAM!

See, this was the book that got the Mimsey magic started. Thanks to the people of Staccato, I was able to write a detective novel. Not only that, I got to introduce everyone's favorite smarmy detective to the world, the one and only Dan Landis.

People always ask if I'm Dan Landis.
I'm not, but I appreciate the compliment.

Always on the lookout for pickanick baskets!

Mimsey at the Movies: Follow That Bird

Hello Gentle Readers,

As you know, I'm a fan of The Muppets.

Apparently Lew Zealand is my spirit animal.

And it was while doing an article on my Top Eleven Muppet Moments that I realized how much I enjoy the film Follow That Bird.

Buy it and play along at home!

Trust Me I'm A Doctor: Five Lessons I Learned Watching Doctor Who

Hello Gentle Readers,

It was while interviewing the one and only Jen Gia that we got to talking about Doctor Who.

Jen Gia. She's like a Twitter Time Lord!

And, I thought, why not share some life lessons I learned from Doctor Who

Jurassic Park still holds up...

Hello Gentle Readers,

I have given my views on Jurassic Park before, and because I was having a bout of the insomnia's, decided to pop it into the laptop. Because, if you're up at 5:30 AM, you might need a little T-Rex.

AND THIS THING STILL HOLDS UP!

Even shirtless Jeff Goldbloom holds up.
Though I think he was far more seductive in that
timeless classic Earth Girls Are Easy

This may come as a surprise to you, but I always loved Dinosaurs. I had a four foot inflatable T-Rex as a child. At least, until it's unfortunate placement directly above an air vent led to little Mimsey awakening to a rocking dinosaur in the corner. After that it was no longer inflated.

I also saw every episode of Dinosaurs.
Which is both timeless and so 90s it's not even funny.

However, and feel free to disagree with me, here: Jurassic Park is really about GIRL POWER!

Seriously, if the Velociraptors had started singing
about being truly outrageous
I wouldn't have been surprised.

And I'm sure you're asking yourself why. Or possibly wondering how many obscure TV references I can incorporate into this blog post. But, let's take a moment to consider which of the nine featured characters actually accomplish something.

Sorry Law & Order fans, but Dr. Huang does exactly zilch.

So who saves the day? Who exactly manages to rescue everyone on the island? Who specifically is the real hero of this movie? I'll give you a hint, it's the other character that wears tiny, tiny shorts.

No lie, I have boxers longer then what that dude is wearing.

I'm of course talking about Dr. Ellie Sattler, PaleoBotanist.

Seen here falling for Sexy Jeff Goldbloom

So, after Newman manages to crash the entire system, Samuel L. Jackson ends up being tired of these melonfarming snakes on this melonfarming plane. Wait, no, scratch that, it's dinosaurs. Definitely dinosaurs. And he decides to do something about it.

Seen here, advising the audience about grasping posteriors.

Except, all he does is turn everything off and back on again. And, if I'm being honest, I kind of think maybe a multi-billion dollar theme park might have a better solution then just Switch Off/Switch On. Like seriously, that's what I do! THEY ARE TAKING A PAGE OUT OF THE MIMSEY TECH SUPPORT MANUAL!

Now, after they turn everything off, who exactly ends up turning the thing back on? Spoiler alert: it's not Samuel L. Jackson.

From L-R: Lady who turns the power back on, girl who turns locks back on,
boy who didn't realize he could totally fit through that fence.

And let's even look at our male hero.

Seen here demonstrating the proper way to deal with adolescent girls.

Now, please don't misunderstand me, Dr. Grant is AWESOME. He faces off against the T-Rex, scares the crap out a kid within five minutes of his first appearance, and manages to keep two incompetent children EVER alive. Seriously, those two kids, shout, get electrocuted, and turn on a giant flashlight. They might as well have waved their arms going "EAT ME! EAT ME!" But, here's the thing. He starts out as a manly man, what with his hat and obvious bonding with Sexy Jeff Goldbloom.

But, just like bananas, Dr. Grant goes soft. Grant's entire character development arc centers on
1) Him becoming more paternal to the kids and 2) Him giving up on digging up dinosaurs. No, really. Remember when he tosses away that raptor claw, the one he used to scare that fat kid? That's him letting go of everything. At the least, he is sacrificing his preconceptions and embracing the now. And quite possibly sacrificing his career to become a parent. GRANT IS A STAY-AT-HOME-MOM!

It's hard to see, but Nedry is drinking Jolt.
I'm not even sure if they make Jolt anymore.

So, basically what I'm saying is: Jurassic Park is awesome. The idea that this flick is promoting Girl Power is equally awesome. And if I'm being honest, I can quote Jurassic Park almost as much as I can quote The Princess Bride. A movie that tells young men everywhere, if you just do what a woman wants long enough, she'll eventually love you.

Jay Mims knows the way to a woman's heart is to eat what she cooks, even if that means zuchhini. Jay also knows what inconceivable means . Jay writes books and is far funnier on Facebook then in real life. He is terrible at Twitter. Jay and The Mimsus live with a passive-aggressive Dalek named Steve, and have semi-adopted their neighbor's cat named Eartha Kitty. There's another cat named Meowlificient, but he's not as interesting. Also a Lizard that Jay calls Bob.

Keeping it real...

Hello Gentle Readers,

I can't believe it's been 22 days. I've managed to do 22 blogs in March, and it's a bit weird how this madness has continued.

There has been cake aplenty.

I'm really excited because I've got several interviews lined up, will finally be doing a review of Follow That Bird, and will even do a Dan Landis post.

Chris Winters has felt left out.

In the mean time, I hope you, the gentle readers, will stay tuned. I appreciate the love and support, and thank you so much for everything!

Jay Mims writes books, blogs, and can definitely appreciate a good pineapple cake. Jay and The Mimsus live with a passive-aggressive Dalek named Steve, and have semi-adopted their neighbor's cat named Eartha Kitty. Hello World...

Hello Gentle Readers,

I am so relieved it's Friday.

Even though I have to attend a student fair on Friday to try and snare attendance for work.

I teach, by the way. It's not just books, blogging and being devilishly handsome.

Ladies...

And, I wanted to make sure you knew, Gentle Readers, that I am so grateful to have this opportunity. To be able to blog every single day in March. And for those who are reading this, thank you. Thank you so much for allowing me this opportunity.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I got to go make the difference in a group of students lives. Mostly by explaining that the lens end of a camera goes TOWARD your subject.

A surprise spotlight on DONNA MILWARD!

Hello Gentle Readers,

For those that are new to the site, Donna Milward has been a real friend to The Mims, and an overall great person.

Pictured: An overall great person

Recently she had a book blog tour that I wasn't able to take part in because, honestly, I didn't know I'd be posting everyday in March until February 28th. So, because I am lazy, forgetful, and a bit spastic, I let the opportunity slip away. And since I'm also lazy, spastic, and impulse-driven, I thought WHY NOT SHINE A SPOTLIGHT!

Aphrodite's War is actually Donna's second book, the first being Thoeba. Both books are available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Smashwords. Donna herself blogs, has a Facebook and is Canadian.

Whether she walks around in a pair of Bret Hart
sunglasses is unclear.

Also she was at some point a meat cutter. Which, I got to be honest, is hilarious and probably what's keeping me from posting a Taylor Swift song in tribute to her.

Ack! I'm so getting turned into sausage for this!
Worth it though.

So, drop what you're doing and go check out the one and only DONNA MILWARD!

Donna Milward lives in Edmonton, Alberta in a tiny house with a huge yard. She’s been writing all her life, but decided to put writing on hold to get ‘a real job’ as a meatcutter and build a future with her beloved troll, Dan and her cat Freya. Twelve years later, an invitation to a Romance Writer’s Conference in Washington D.C. led not only to new friends and new knowledge, but to the inspiration to write again. Thoeba was completed the following year. Donna likes to mix her fascination with reincarnation and all things paranormal with her love of mythology in her work, and has even written her own myth ‘The Sacred Truth” (on earthtothoeba.blogspot.com) as the lore behind Thoeba and future novels to come. Donna enjoys fishing, gardening and canning. Despite these hobbies, she much prefers city life.

Pictured: My idea of Canadian city life

Best wishes and continued success Donna Milward!

Jay Mims attributes Donna Milward with writing the most memorable review he has ever read. Jay writes books, blogs, and has a far larger group of friends and family then what are included in that montage. Jay and The Mimsus live with a passive-aggressive Dalek named Steve, and have semi-adopted their neighbor's cat named Eartha Kitty. There's another cat named Meowlificient, but he's not as interesting. Also a Lizard that Jay calls Bob. Jay is far funnier on Facebook then in real life. He is terrible at Twitter.

Mimsey's Top Eleven Muppet Moments...

Hello Gentle Readers,

For those that don't know, there's a new Muppet movie out Muppet's Most Wanted.

Now, I wanted to celebrate this movie, and figured I could go one of two ways:

1) I could do a celebration of all things Muppets, with a list of my favorite moments or

2) I could totally make fun of the fact that The Muppets just ripped off the plot of Ernest Goes To Jail!

In a perfect world, Kermit would get superpowers,
Fozzie would have a sidekick named Bobby
and Jim Varney would help the frog escape.

Learning to let it go...

Hello Gentle Readers,

The Mimsus and I went to see Frozen this weekend.

And first of all, that thing should be called Miscommunication: The Musical. This isn't a Mimsey review, though maybe I'll do that at some point.

From left to right:
Serious sibling rivalry issues,
doesn't understand she can leave the castle,
BEST CHARACTER EVER,
needs therapy, Han Solo on Ice

What I want to talk about is letting things go.

I have an anger management issue. I realize that 90% of the people who know me, think I'm either a good guy or that I fart rainbows.

Ladies.

But, I'm also a guy who tends to let way too much stuff bother him. Don't get me wrong, I don't tend to blow up or anything, and I can definitely get upset about some really stupid stuff.

Like people who come to a complete stop to make a turn on green!
NO ONE ELSE HAS THE RIGHT OF WAY!

The problem I have is, I tend to let that anger build up inside. I bury that stuff, and end up either overreacting to a situation or making terrible decisions.

Trust me, nothing says therapy like a
scattered-covered-smothered with raisin toast.
Watching Frozen, it hit me, I can't keep holding onto these negative feelings. I have to either confront them, let them go, or address the issue that is causing them. But right now, the only one I'm hurting by holding onto negative feelings is myself.
And time feeling bad is time that could be spent making a pillow fort.
And now, someone much better at explaining this

Fred Rogers: Always willing to explain what to do
with the mad that you feel.

So, I may not be the best writer, the most successful blogger, or the best human being, but I'm going to try to be the best me I can be.
